Silicon Valley Jewish Film Festival Opening Night
In memory of the 10th Anniversary of the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster, the SVJFF is honored to present this special film, along with a unique program. Colonel Ilan Ramon, the flight leader of the stunning 1981 Israeli air strike on an Iraqi nuclear reactor, was chosen to become a NASA astronaut and participate in the 2003 Columbia space shuttle mission. Tragically, the entire crew perished when the spacecraft disintegrated in flight. Ramon, the son of an Auschwitz survivor, viewed himself as a representative of the Jewish people, so among the objects that he took into space was a miniature Sefer Torah that a Bergen-Belsen survivor had hidden during his imprisonment.

This inspiring documentary skillfully weaves Ramon's story with the journey of this tiny symbol of survival from pre-war Germany through the cruel depths of the Holocaust to the heights of space.

The SVJFF is honored to present Rona Ramon, wife of the late Israeli hero, who will speak after the movie, answer audience questions, and reflect on her husband's accomplishments. In addition, Dan Cohen, who spent seven years researching and producing the film, will provide insights learned while making this unique and special film.
