"Beer Before 1820: The Flavorful Cornucopia of Early American Brews" with Joe and Dennis Fisher

Program includes presentation of the 2012 Amelia Award to Andrew F. Smith

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

Before beer became an industrialized product, brewing was done on a small scale using a huge range of now nearly forgotten ingredients. The result was diverse and highly local flavors that revealed the traditions of brewing brought to the colonies and young nation by waves of colonists and immigrants. Joe and Dennis Fisher, the authors of The Homebrewer's Garden and Brewing Made Easy, have decades of experience brewing beers from herbs and grains they have grown on their organic farm in Winterpoint, Maine. They will trace the history and origins of some of these different brewing styles to illuminate the story of drinking in early America, while we sample unusual beers prepared according to historic practices and snack on cheeses, chutneys, and rustic breads.
