ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE: Aki Onda & Paul Clipson
Cassette musician Aki Onda collaborates with a San Fransisco based filmmaker Paul Clipson for his final performance of the 2012 Artist-in-Residence series. Onda and Clipson render images and sounds as if a fragmented journey of landscapes and memories. They investigate personal, intuitive spaces, through their favored technologies of Super 8mm film and cassette Walkman. Both artists place significant emphasis on performance environments, where their visual and sonic field recordings interact to create sensory collages, born out of the subjective impressions of the audience.

Aki Onda is an electronic musician, composer, and visual artist. Onda was born in Japan and currently resides in New York. He is particularly known for his Cassette Memories project  works compiled from a "sound diary" of field-recordings collected by Onda over a span of two decades. Onda's musical instrument of choice is the cassette Walkman. Not only does he capture field recordings with the Walkman, he also physically manipulates multiple Walkmans with electronics in his performances. In recent years, Onda often works in interdisciplinary fields and collaborates with filmmakers, choreographers and visual artists. He has performed at The Kitchen (New York), Time-Based Art Festival (Portland), ICA (London), Louvre Museum, Palais de Tokyo, Fondation Cartier (Paris), International Film Festival Rotterdam (Rotterdam), Nam June Paik Art Center (Seoul) and many others.

Paul Clipson is a San Francisco-based filmmaker who creates Super 8mm films edited in-camera that reveal the rhythms, energy and sensuality of light and movement. Often collaborating on live performance events with sound artists and musicians including Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Joshua Churchill, Gregg Kowalsky, and Tashi Wada, Clipson utilizes multiple exposures, dissolves, and macro imagery to foreground unexpected visual forms. Screenings and performances in 2012 include engagements at the Berkeley Art Museum (Berkeley) and Festival Play (Barcelona), and screenings at Centre Pompidou (Paris) and Festival De Nuevo Cine Latinamericano (Havana.)
