Mac McCaughan
Join WFMU in welcoming Mac McCaughan to Monty Hall.
McCaughan was a founding member of the rock band Superchunck. Formed in 1989, they were one of the bands that helped define the Chapel Hill music scene of the 1990s. Their energetic, high-velocity style was influenced by punk rock. The band released a string of full-length albums and compilations throughout the 90's. Now McCaughan has taken a collection of unused tracks he had written for various movie soundtracks and assembled a new solo album. He needed only to write a few more songs to round out what was supposed to be an invigorating power pop record.
The album, titled Non-Believers, explores his fascination with that early-'80s era of music when punk evolved into something more introspective, focusing on themes of isolation and eventually turning into post-punk and new wave. As he puts it, he was thinking about a time when bands were "using keyboards and drum machines to relate through their music a disaffection or alienation" from society, school, whatever.
McCaughan comes from the indie and punk rock worlds, he's always shied away from the perceived hubris of putting out a record under his own name. "There's something about it that's way too 'look at me,'" the singer and songwriter admits. However, given the fact that Non-Believers is exploring such a personal set of influences, putting out an album as simply Mac McCaughan for the first time just makes sense.

Ryley Walker
is the reincarnation of the true American guitar player. That's as much a testament to his roving, rambling ways, or the fact that his Guild D-35 guitar has endured a few stints in the pawnshop. Swap out rural juke joints for rotted DIY spaces and the archetype is solidly intact. His personal life might be tumultuous and his residential status in question, but his bedrock is disciplined daily rehearsal and an inexhaustible wellspring of song craft.

Ryley Walker's album Primrose Green feels like it was made by a man unstuck in time. It could be a lost Tim Buckley or Nick Drake album with its jazz-inflected, acoustic guitar-driven pastoral quality. Walker is an amazing guitar player, taking the instrument from gentle, bucolic strumming to aggressively percussive.
His fingerpicking is otherworldly.
Wisely, Walker has surrounded himself with outstanding musicians on Primrose Green, notably drummer Frank Rosaly. Rosaly's intuitive rhythms and brilliant, crisp playing complements Walker's inventive guitar work. Together, they forge a retro yet avant sound that is both electrifying and soothing.

The Fleshwounds
Flesh Wounds are a rock 'n' roll band from Carrboro, NC, with Laura King on drums and Dan Kinney and Montgomery Morris on guitars.
Laura, Dan, and Montgomery began playing together in 2011 as "some semi-legit side-action for all three players," away from their other projects. They quickly determined that the music they were making together was "doper by far" than their other bands, and Flesh Wounds became a reality. The band released a cassette on All Day Records in December of 2012 that "burned up the charts in a few zip codes," but their debut Merge 7" is their first vinyl release. The Flesh Wounds
