Recently, the United Way has begun to turn our focus greatly toward Youth Mental Health. At the end of 2019, we will be releasing a comprehensive plan for Youth Mental Health in our area, including action steps and policy agenda points. Youth Mental Health is a crucially important issue in our area that is often overlooked. According to the Pennsylvania Area Youth Survey (PAYS), more than one in three (1/3) of youth in our area are sad or depressed MOST days. Furthermore, youth in rural areas are 1.8 more likely to die from suicide. The data speaks for itself in showing that Youth Mental Health is a critical need.

The United Way is fighting every day to provide better access to services, opportunity, and connections for youth in our area. Additionally, we have recently developed a youth mental health task force to gather community members, medical professionals, and school districts to address the root cause of the issue and to create positive change.

Joanne Sloneem, Vice President of Education at the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way, says about the event, We are excited for this amazing line-up of artists! We are even more excited to host this event to benefit Youth Mental Health in our area. At the United Way, we see the need in our community for more Youth Mental Health initiatives and we are working hard every day to better educate and provide resources for those needs.

The mission of the United Way is to serve as a catalyst, leader, and/or partner for community efforts to develop solutions, reduce need, and have a positive measurable impact on identified areas of concern; to improve the quality of life for residents of the Central Susquehanna Valley. Those areas of concern being: behavioral health & addiction, basic needs and poverty, lack of transportation, social opportunities for teens, accessibility to quality early childcare, and a need for greater understanding and appreciation for diversity.
