Passion's Play
NEW WORLD PERFORMANCE LAB PREMIERES NEW IMMERSIVE THEATRE EVENT

NWPLs Passions Play is postponed until further notice

Akron, OH New World Performance Laboratory (NWPL) premieres in Akron a newly devised and immersive theatre event, Passions Play, based on the work of Symbolist dramatist and Nobel Prize winner Maurice Maeterlinck. Passions Play opens at The Balch Street Theatre on May 15 and runs through June 13, 2020. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8pm and matinees on Sundays at 2pm. The Balch Street Theatre is located at 220 South Balch Street, Akron Oh, 44302. The immersive nature of this performance limits the number of spectators to maximum 20 for each performance. Tickets are $20 general admission and are available online at https://nwplpassion.bpt.me or by calling 234-678-8408. Reservations are highly encouraged. There will be an opening night gala with a reception following the performance. Opening night tickets: $50. Pay What You Wish Thursday performances (including a preview on May 14): tickets will be first-come, first-served starting one hour before the event and admission will be collected following the performance. Full-price tickets will be available in advance for Pay What You Wish performances.

Akron audiences already know that each of New World Performance Labs plays is a unique experience. In Passions Play, NWPL has developed an immersive theatre event that surrounds the spectators and takes them on a dream-like journey into the worlds of childhood memory, desire, darkness, love, and loss. Immersive theatre eliminates any walls between actor and spectator. The action of the play takes place throughout the theatre space and the lines of reality and fiction are dissolved. In Passions Play, a limited number of audience members accompany the ensembles actors as they search for the elusive bluebird of happiness and discover the pleasures and pains of love and compassion hidden within the mysteries of life. Passions Play is a meditation on what an astonishing thing it is, merely to live.

Passions Play is directed by NWPL co-artistic director James Slowiak, with costume design by Inda Blatch-Geib, lighting design by Chris Hariasz, sound design by Dave Cranston, and scenic design and technical direction by Kirsten Williams. Actors include NWPLs co-artistic director Jairo Cuesta and long time company members, Jamie Hale, Justin Hale, Rosilyn Jentner, and Debora Totti, with guest artists Josy Jones and Neema Tamang.

Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949) is a Belgian playwright, poet, and essayist who wrote in French. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911 for his dramatic works that are distinguished by a wealth of imagination and by a poetic fancy, which reveals, sometimes in the guise of a fairy tale, a deep inspiration The main themes in his work are death and the meaning of life. NWPL has turned to the work of Maeterlinck in 2020 to use it as a map to explore a landscape where one can live a more profound, human, and universal life. Sometimes turning to the works of past masters can give us insight into and respite from the angst and anxiety caused by todays world situation. The result of NWPLs theatrical exploration is Passions Play. Funding for the project has come from The Char and Chuck Fowler Family Foundation, Ohio Arts Council, Akron Community Foundation, and GAR Foundation.
