In honor of 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment and Womens History Month!

The Norwalk Historical Society will host a Woman Suffrage Centennial Symposium
An historical look at woman suffrage will be presented by The League of Women Voters of Norwalk, historian Alice Warren, and WCSU professor Dr. Darla Shaw.

The League of Women Voters of Norwalk will explore the history behind the passage of the 19th Amendment, which assures U.S. citizens the right to vote without regard to sex, as well as the continued work that remained to be done to achieve full equity at the ballot box. They will also explain the history behind The League of Women Voters which was founded in 1920 to tackle that work, and continues working to this day with the goal of engaging all individuals, households, communities, and policy makers in creating a more perfect democracy.

Historian Alice Warren will highlight the Hill sisters of Norwalk - Clara Mossman Hill, Helena Hill Weed, and Elsie Hill - and their collective efforts to secure the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, through advocacy and protest. Clara barnstormed the state on speaking tours, while Helena and Elsie became active in the National Woman's Party, campaigning across the country, and participating in protests that resulted in arrest and imprisonment.

Dr. Darla Shaw will bring suffragist and former Ridgefield, CT resident, Alice Paul to life. This short  performance will highlight Alice Pauls connection to Norwalk suffragist, Elsie Hill, the work they accomplished together, and little known facts about their lives.

The present and future of woman suffrage will be explored by the new local organization Norwalk Women Who Vote with special guest, Laurel S. Peterson, Norwalks first Poet Laureate, and artist/founder of the Duryea Project, TL Duryea.

Norwalk Women Who Vote will discuss how their new group came to be and the importance of women-led grassroots political organizing. They will also take a close look at the current involvement of Norwalk women in local politics and the opportunities that exist for women to get a seat at the table. Norwalks first Poet Laureate, Laurel S. Peterson will present an original poem as part of the NWWVs presentation.

TL Duryea, American Artist, Activist and the Founder of The Duryea Project, celebrating the achievements of notable women, will discuss the intersection of Feminism, Art and Commerce and her own journey on the process. Learn why she started painting Sheroes, how it turned into a product line, and what she hopes to achieve with the work.
