Who We Are
ADVANCING THE ARTS Performance Works NorthWest || Linda Austin Dance advances the performing arts of the Pacific Northwest, engaging artists and audiences fully in the process of experimentation, creation and dialog around the presentation of contemporary performance.As an artist-run incubator for contemporary performance, PWNW simultaneously nurtures local artists and provides opportunities for Portland audiences and artists to engage with nationally-renowned performers and their work. Based since 2000 in its S.E. Portland home, PWNW is distinct in encompassing a range of performance styles, genres and interdisciplinary approaches.
PWNW was founded in 1999 by Artistic Director Linda Austin and Technical Director Jeff Forbes. Through their extensive professional relationships with artists of our region and around the country, combined with their unique curatorial vision, Austin & Forbes provide rich and compelling programming for Northwest audiences. What We Do
ARTIST AND AUDIENCES PWNW cultivates artists and arts audiences, providing multiple opportunities for engagement in the creation and viewing of new performance. The breadth of work at PWNW covers a broad range of performance styles, genres and interdisciplinary approaches, including cutting edge dance, music, performance and media arts.
PROGRAMS AND SERVICES Our flexible programming, responsive to both needs and opportunities presented to us by artists and audiences, is currently built around these core programs:
Linda Austin Dance: Solo and group projects by PWNW Artistic Director Linda Austin
Alembic Artist Program: Artist residencies and co-production opportunities focused on developing new performances by local and visiting artists
Cabaret Boris & Natasha: A salon-style potpourri of performance (named after two deceased feline mascots) each fall.
Dance/Play/Move: Kids' movement class taught by keyon gaskin and Jen Hackworth in 6-week sessions.
PWNW Space Rental Program: Offering subsidized rehearsal, workshop and performance space to many of Portland's leading performance groups, choreographers, and individual performers
Special Projects: Examples include a music/dance series in 2001, a commission of a new work by Sally Silvers in 2002, The Tuning Project with Lisa Nelson, Karen Nelson and Steve Paxton in 2008; Linda Austin's History in the Making Workshop Series 2008-2009.
