Romeo & Juliet by Shakespeare in the Cannery

On July 18, 2014 Vacant Lot Productions, in partnership with the Arlene Francis Center, premieres a six-week engagement of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The production will transform the site of the former California Packing Company's Plant No. 5 in Santa Rosa's Railroad Square into an outdoor theater, complete with solar-powered stage lighting and an innovative set that incorporates the remaining cannery walls into its very design.

The production promises to revitalize the landmark cannery ruins, rescuing the site from the blight that has plagued it in recent years. Artistic Director David Lear, a thirty-year theater veteran who has worked with 6th Street Playhouse and Cinnabar Theatre in Petaluma and is a founding member of the Loading Zone theater company, first had the vision for Shakespeare in the ruins eight years ago. This past year, Lear approached Martin Hamilton - the award-winning director of the Arlene Francis Center for Spirit, Art and Politics - with his idea and they entered into a partnership.

Hence was born, Shakespeare in the Cannery.

Casting for the production, featuring entirely local, professional actors and musicians, is complete and rehearsals are in full force. Shakespeare in the Cannery will be sustainable, green and firmly based in strong, long-lasting community partnerships. Running July 18 through August 23, the six-week engagement of the enduring classic Romeo and Juliet offers the people of Sonoma County, and beyond, the chance to wine and dine under the summer night sky while enjoying an inventive take on Shakespeare.
