Sherry Cothran Concert Benefiting UMD, 2/20
Strings Attached Productions presents singer/songwriter Sherry Cothran in an unforgettable evening of "Love Songs and Other Stories from the Untamed Women of the Old Testament."

Once upon a time, in a century now past, Sherry Cothran was a rock star. In the late '90s she fronted popular and award-winning indie alt rockers The Evinrudes, was kissed by Ringo Starr, had her picture in Rolling Stone magazine, and shared stages with such popular bands as Goo Goo Dolls, Spin Doctors, Bare Naked Ladies, and more.

Along the way, from there to here, she's acted in a film and written songs for television, movies, and radio. Oh, by the way, this critically-acclaimed singer/songwriter also happens to be pastor of an urban, multi-cultural Nashville church.

Today this artist merges her talents in pop culture and religion. With a passion for community development, Cothran has built partnerships with many agencies that are housed in her church, West Nashville UMC, where she preaches most every Sunday and serves as senior pastor. A space of radical hospitality for the community, the church helps provide non-perishable food and hot meals for over 200 people per week, small group support for families of prisoners and prisoners re-entering society, resettlement services for refugees, and restorative yoga. The church is a hub of transformation and healing for the urban community in West Town. In addition, the church hosts many talented musicians who often write original songs for worship services.

Cothran recently released her 6th CD, Sunland, a compilation she wrote and produced based on the lives of the "untamed" women of the Old Testament. Combining her skills as a writer with the arresting sultriness of her singing voice, she uncovers the woman's voice of biblical text. Piercing, honest, poetic, and subtle, Cothran reveals a world where the oppressed channel the mystery of God for the greater good.

Along with recent features in USA Today, The Tennessean, and United Methodist Global Reporter, Cothran was also the subject of a video interview released by United Methodist Communications. In "Right Rockin' Rev.," the camera follows her around for a weekend, from a club show with The Evinrudes to a Sunday morning service. Cothran also leads workshops based on encounters with biblical text and performs regularly both as a solo artist and with The Evinrudes as they explore new music.

Critical Acclaim for Sherry Cothran
"Sunland recasts the stories of lesser known women of the Hebrew Bible who opened themselves to the transcendent and accomplished extraordinary things. Working with a folk, rock and at times jazz-inflected palette, Cothran infuses her arrangements with Latin, Middle Eastern and Eastern European modalities as haunting as the lives of the courageous women she so vividly reimagines." Bill Friskics-Warren, I'll Take You There: Pop Music and the Urge for Transcendence

"On her new CD, Sunland, Cothran revisits the women of the Old Testament with the intellectual skill of a first rate biblical scholar, and with the artistic and poetic insights of an outstanding songwriter. Her music is poetic, smart, devotional, and grounded deeply in her own faith and practice as a Christian minister." John S. McClure, Charles G. Finney Professor of Preaching and Worship, Vanderbilt Divinity School

"If Aimee Mann had continued with 'Til Tuesday, her music would probably sound a lot like Who Let The World In, the first solo album from former Evinrudes singer Cothran...marked by panoramic pop arrangements, ascending choruses and an overall mood of falling-angel melancholy and spiritual yearning." Jim Ridley, The Nashville Scene

"The Evinrudes' self-titled major-label debut brought Nashville's indie rock scene to the surface when the single 'Drive Me Home' hit the airwaves in the Music City. With the distinctive vocal prowess of Sherry Cothran, 'Drive Me Home,' 'Have Some Rain' and 'Jimmy's on Crack (And I Don't Care)' showcase the band's ability to create melodic pop songs. The vocals and guitars are the centerpieces of the record. 'Otis' creates a mood that allows Cothran's dreamy vocals to encapsulate the listener into her web of sincerity. The Evinrudes have managed to stay true to their indie rock roots, while including pop sensibility to create a successful major-label debut." AllMusic Guide
