Concert #1: Unity and Contrast

Franz Schubert, Mass No. 5 in A-flat major
Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 8pm
Church of the Holy Name, 1689 Centre Street, West Roxbury, MA

We begin our 38th season with Schubert's dazzling Mass No. 5 in A-flat major, considered by many his finest. He labored intensely over the piece, longer than any other composition, and revised it extensively after its first performance in 1822.

Breaking with conventions in his four earlier masses, Schubert gave rein to greater intensity and expressivity. Romantic elements in one movement are followed by symphonic treatment of themes in the next. Forthright chorales contrast with more intimate solos, all while building unity amid diversity. Filled with expression and unusual sonorities, this stunning work is understood to represent Schubert's reflections on life and death.

Soloists: Kristen Watson, soprano; Pamela Dellal, mezzo; Martin Kelly, tenor; Thomas Jones, baritone

Concert #2: Breadth and Depth

Ernest Bloch, Avodath Hakodesh (Sacred Service)
Sunday, March 16, 2014 at 3 pm
The Second Church in Newton, 60 Highland Street, West Newton, MA

Come experience the sweeping emotional power of universal human themes. When commissioned to write a setting of the Sabbath morning liturgy for the American Reform congregation, Bloch learned Hebrew and steeped himself in the text. Ultimately, he spent four years creating a large-scale work designed to be performed uninterruptedone better suited to the concert stage than synagogue.

Bloch said of his composition: "It is a whole drama in itself. I hope it will bring to the souls, minds and hearts of the people, a little more confidence, make them a little more kind and indulgent than they were and bring them peace."

Soloist: Rick Lawrence, baritone

Concert #3: Craft and Consolation

Heinrich Schütz, Musikalische Exequien
Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 8 pm
Church of the Holy Name, 1689 Centre Street, West Roxbury, MA

Our season concludes with the exquisite Musikalische Exequien, which Schütz composed for the funeral of his friend and patron Prince Heinrich Posthumus Reuss.  A well-respected humanist and devout Lutheran, Reuss carefully organized the details of his own funeral in advance.

Schutz combines Renaissance elements with those of the early Baroque period, which he learned studying in Italy under Gabrielli and Monteverdi. The texts, from casket panels designed by the prince himself, focus on God's mercy, comfort for the grieving, and hope for redemption. Two and a half centuries later, Johannes Brahms would adopt the structure and many of the texts for his choral masterpiece, Ein Deutsches Requiem ("A German Requiem").

Soloists: Susan Consoli , soprano, Deborah Rentz-Moore, mezzo, and Clare McNamara, alto
