[EXTENSION] IN THE RED AND BROWN WATER by Tarell Alvin McCraney
"No piece of total theatre could have better lived up to the promise of its title than Tarell Alvin McCraney's extraordinary In the Red and Brown Water McCraney is a distinctive voice in American theatre."

-Theatre Critic, Evening Standard Review/ London

December 8, 2019

Written by: Tarell Alvin McCraney

Directed by: Lauren E. Turner

Location: Pythian Market [234 Loyola Avenue]

In the Red and Brown Water is the first play in Tarell Alvin McCraney's Brother/Sister Plays Trilogy. The piece centers around Oya, a teenage track star destined for greatness. She has to decide early in the play whether she will go to college on a track scholarship or become the caretaker of her ailing mother. The audience will witness Oya make her decision and the aftermath that follows.

Partially inspired by Yerma, Federico Garcia Lorca's masterwork about a woman yearning in vain for fertility, Tarell Alvin McCraney's In the Red and Brown Water explores similar themes, only steeped in mythology and legends with West African influence.

Director, Lauren E. Turner set the play in a New Orleans housing project in 1999, when No Limit and Cash Money Records were establishing a name for New Orleans. The design team will recreate the era through lighting, costumes, set, and sound.
