The Santaland Diaries by DAVID SEDARIS in ASHLAND, OR
The Santaland Diaries is a one-man-play based on the works of David Sedaris and initially broadcast on NPR in December 1992. It's misanthropic, dry/satirical humor made it an instant classic and since then has gained a sort of cult following. The story follows a young(ish) Sedaris as he arrives in New York City with the hopes of being an author for his favorite soap opera, One Life to Live. However, things don't go as well as he'd hoped and he's forced to take a job as an elf at the Macy's Santaland and hilarity ensues with his misanthropic descriptions of events, children and co-workers as he struggles to stay sane through the busy holiday season. This is what he writes after a ungrateful parent threatens to have him fired:
"I had two people say that to me today: I'm going to have you fired. Go ahead, be my guest. I'm wearing a green velvet costume. It doesn't get any worse than this. Who do these people think they are? I'm going to have you fired, and I want to lean over and say: I'm going to have you killed."
Clinton K. Clark brings his successful rendition of the play to his college town for the first time after four successful runs in his hometown of Bend, OR since 2011. Clark's portrayal has been described by local media as "the solution to the rough holiday season," "effective as ever," "hard working" and "making new discoveries every year." This show has something for everyone from harsh human hating humor to tender heartwarming moments . You will want to catch this one night only performance for the first time ever in Ashland.
