SKIN DEEP SEA by STANTON WOOD
When Felicity, the good daughter of America's fifth-richest robber baron, discovers the power to turn her sister Sorrow, the bad daughter, into a mermaid, she sets off a series of events that transform herself, her family, and everyone they touch. Ranging from the Wilds of Pennsylvania to idyllic country roads in Japan; from the bottom of the sea to pirate battles on automaton-piloted airships, Skin Deep Sea is a rollicking adventure through an alternate (but surprisingly familiar) America. Will Robber Baron Penelope defeat Leland Stanford and win the object of her affection? Will Felicity learn to master her inner power? Will anyone listen to Captain Wilson, the lonely, peg-legged pirate? And can Sorrow reverse the curse and forgive her sister (and herself)?
SKIN DEEP SEA, the second show in the Workhaus Collective's 8th season as company-in-residence at the Playwrights Center, is a fantasia of late-19th century robber barons, magical mermaids, drunken airship pirates, and two-headed witches. In the tradition of A Midsummer Night's Dream, where love and hate are never permanent states and people can be transformed into animals and back again, this new play promises whimsy, mayhem, and theatrical surprise.

Sam Landman, Adrienne Sweeney (of Commonweal Theatre Company), Chloe Armao, Molly Pach, Josiah Thompson, Emily Dussault, Tony Sarnicki, and Jane Froilland. Directed by Workhaus company member Alan M. Berks with costume, props, and puppet design by Lisa Conley.
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT:
Stanton Wood is a member of Workhaus Collective, as well as a resident artist and founding member of the award-winning Rabbit Hole Ensemble in New York, with whom he has created THE TABLE OF FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER, CANDIDE AMERICANA, BIG THICK ROD, and THE NIGHT OF NOSFERATU, which received 6 New York Innovative Theatre Award nominations (including Outstanding Full Length Script). Other plays include THE SNOW QUEEN, THE MAGICAL FOREST OF BABA YAGA, THE BLUE BIRD (co-written with Lori Ann Laster), DOWN THE DRAIN, and MR. HOOVER'S TEA PARTY. His work has been commissioned, developed and/or produced by Urban Stages, Manhattan Class Company, Playwrights Horizons, The Hangar Theatre, Primary Stages, New York Theatre Workshop, and City Theatre in Pittsburgh, among others. He is also the author of the animated podcast LIES THE MIRROR TOLD ME, the creative blog "The Unbelievably Strange Wildlife Garden", and a contributing author to Patent Number 09/955,678. As a narrative designer, he has worked on award winning computer game projects at Zoesis Studios (where he was creative director), and Pandemic Studios (now part of EA). He is a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and has served on the jury for both the Andre Norton Award and the Ray Bradbury Award. His plays are published by Original Works, Indie Theatre Now, and Playscripts. He has an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University. This is his first production with the Workhaus Collective. ABOUT WORKHAUS COLLECTIVE:
Unlike other theaters, each playwright member becomes the Artistic Director of the company for their production, taking complete responsibility and creative control of the artistic vision that ultimately finds its way to the stage.
