In the summer of 2008, militants from the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) declared an âoil warâ in Nigeria. This was one of the biggest spikes yet on a radar screen dotted with conflict and tragedy. This is the Niger Delta â the human and environmental consequences of oil extraction, the history of non-violent protest, and the members of a new insurgency who, in the three years since the filmmakers met them as college students, became the young men of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). A journey of multi-layered revelation and ever-deepening questions, the film is about survival, corruption, greed and armed resistance, and raises broader issues of oil politics, mass media agendas and the role of independent journalists.
