Ear Heart Music: Hutchins East Debut
Hutchins East is a new ensemble, based in New York City, dedicated to playing the Violin Octet instruments made by Dr. Carleen Hutchins (1911-2009). In 1957 Hutchins was challenged by American composer Henry Brant (1913-2008) to create eight new string instruments spanning the entire range of written music, each having the acoustical properties of the violin in its range.
In the ensemble's debut, Hutchins's and Brant's work will be honored with a performance of Brant's first work for the octet from 1965, a new work by Christopher Otto, and transcriptions of music by J.S. Bach and Palestrina.
