Today's headlines are filled with distressing stories about the melamine contamination of baby formula in China that has led to death and serious illness in the vulnerable young. But the Chinese story is not new: foods have been manipulated for thousands of years by producers, distributors, and retailers in the interest of easy profit. While some cases are mere deceptions without health risks, others have had tragic consequences. Award-winning British journalist Bee Wilson has examined the history of food frauds in her new book, "Swindled: The Dark History of Food Fraud from Poisoned Candy to Counterfeit Coffee," and will address this important and timely topic in a thought-provoking discussion.
Bee Wilson is the author of "The Hive: The Story of the Honeybee and Us" and writes a weekly food column for London's "Sunday Telegraph." Her work has appeared in "The New Yorker," "The New York Times," "The Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery," and "The New Statesman." Wilson's accolades include Food Journalist of the Year by the Guild of Food Writers and Food Writer of the Year by BBC Radio 4.
