First Person Arts Presents: The First Person Voice (writing class)
Painted Bride Arts Center Philadelphia, PA
In the middle of my life, I found myself in a dark wood, for the straight way was lost.Dante
Mondays, September 22 - November 24, 6-9PM
The subject of memoir is not experience but the revelation of consciousness. Well be reading various memoirists and essayists in order to discover how consciousness is constructed and well be focusing especially on the role of memory. Well spend a good deal of our time together examining the first-person voice and exploring the conventions of personal essays and memoir in order to investigate the legitimacy of self-life-writing: what are the fundamental tenets of constructing an authentic self on the page? How can we be authorized to tell the truth?
Well be sparking the creative spirit via in-class writing exercises and participants will also workshop a personal essay or chapter from a memoir.
