| Description |
Jean Giraudoux wrote this play during the German occupation of France in WWII. We join a group of corrupt businessmen who have plans to tear up the streets of Paris in order to unearth the oil the prospector has found there. The Madwoman of Chaillot finds out about this plot, determines that these men will not turn the world into an unhappy place and sets about to destroy them. She gathers her friends, Gabrielle, Constance, and Josephine, along with her vagabond friends, and has the evil doers tried, convicted, and sentenced to eternal damnation. Once they are gone, Aurelia declares the world has returned to a place of beauty, harmony and love.
Although this play was written as a commentary on the political situation in Paris during WWII, and speaks to Giraudoux's abhorence of conformity and regimenation, it could have been written today. This piece transcends time and place and is truly universal in its comic yet insightful presentation of good vs evil.
