Discover What Scientists Know... NOAA Heritage in the Pacific NW goes back almost 200 years. NOAA's predecessor agencies have surveyed waters, forecasted the weather and managed fisheries in the Pacific NW since the 1800s. Soon after President Thomas Jefferson signed the charter for the U.S. Coast Survey in 1807, ships began sailing the Pacific NW to survey the coasts. The Bureau of Commercial Fisheries and Weather Bureau are also predecessor agencies. In 1970 under an Executive Order signed by President Nixon, NOAA became the umbrella agency uniting these and other agencies with the common theme of protecting, conserving and managing our nation's coastal and ocean resources.
