The 5th Annual Tour de Cider Donut
The fifth year of the annual Tour de Cider Donut is going to be a little bit different. In the past, we've mostly visited the orchards where these seasonal treats are made on site. But this year we're getting a bit of a late start. Sorry about that.
As it turns out, apple orchards aren't the only places to get cider donuts.
Some of people's favorites come from bakeries and farm stands around the region. In fact, there is a new operator in town that has been winning the hearts, minds and bellies of cider donut fans throughout Albany. So this year, we're going to put some of these places through the paces.
There is just one complication. Cider Belly donuts isn't officially open on Saturdays. However, they are open early on Saturday morning to pick up orders that have been placed on Friday.
That's where this Brown Paper Ticket thing comes in.
In a first for the Tour de Cider Donut, we are selling tickets. This isn't a money making scheme. It's a way to get an accurate count for the first order of the day. Processing fees will add a bit of expense, but it's still a cheap day out, and it's going to save me a lot of headaches. For those who sign on, here's what you are in for.
8:00 AM - The Gathering
- We start with Cider Belly which is at 25 North Pearl Street in Albany. - Then we go old school with a visit to Schuyler Bakery in Watervliet. - Just around the corner is Bella Napoli in Latham, a place so civilized it has seats. - From there it's off to Yonder Farms, which is the top cider donut on Yelp. - You'll thank me for the 24 minute drive to the Farm at Kristy's Barn (the TU top pick).
I have no idea when it ends, but it will have to be after 10:00 AM since that's when Kristy's Barn opens.
If past performance is any prediction of future results, this should be a fun day out. Everyone is responsible for their own transportation. I'll provide scoresheets. You are welcome to join us for any part of the tour. If you have to leave early that's understandable. But please understand that only fully completed scoresheets will be used to determine the victor of the day's contest.
Oh yes. It most definitely is a contest. And my hope is that next year we'll have our own tournament of champions. So the winner of this will get to go head-to-head with the top orchards of our region (minus Hicks-Wilson). I learned the hard way these marvelous cider donuts are just way too far north for inclusion on future tours. Still, you should try to get there. At least once.
Please bring a pen. Please be on time. The tour will begin promptly. Rain or shine.
