Cio in Concert : Dia De Muertos Concert
MAURICIO ALEXANDER (CIO) Singer-Songwriter/Actor-Screenwriter-Director, Mauricio Alexander aka Cio was born in Mexico, City Mexico and raised in Washington D.C. As a child he was classically trained in piano, and while studying at Sidwell Friends School, he picked up guitar and saxophone, performing rock and jazz throughout high school. Cio earned his BA in Performing Arts at Oberlin College, where he recorded his first album with the a cappella group The Obertones, followed by his first national tour with the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after graduating. Since moving to New York City, Cio has been an active singer, composer and performer and has worked with indie and hip-hop artists from around the world, having also toured in over 40 states around the country.
His fusion of soul, indie rock and hip-hop music earned him attention at the NYC Latin Alternative Music Conference and his work as a filmmaker and composer was recognized by the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) and the HBO New York Latino International Film Festival where he was honored as rising talent in 2012.
Debuting new music and short films from his recent repertoire, and joined by special musical guest artists, Cio celebrates his 40th Birthday on the Mexican Holiday Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead).
DIA DE MUERTOS Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. In most regions of Mexico November 1 is to honor children and infants, whereas deceased adults are honored on November 2. This is indicated by generally referring to November 1 mainly as Día de los Inocentes ("Day of the Innocents") but also as Día de los Angelitos ("Day of the Little Angels") and November 2 as Día de los Muertos or Día de los Difuntos ("Day of the Dead"). Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas (offerings), honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, as well as visiting cemeteries with these as gifts.
