CLARION CHOIR SINGS RACHMANINOFF AND STEINBERG
"a pensive and mystical performance" The New York Times (re: The Clarion Choir)
In recent years, The Clarion Choir has emerged as one of the country's preeminent vocal groups and has demonstrated a special affinity for Russian music. The New York Times described the Choir's January 2014 Rachmaninoff's Vespers as "singing with a hushed, intense intimacy that bloomed into a full-blooded, gorgeous sheen."
Now Clarion returns with selections from Rachmaninoff's incandescent Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (1910) and the New York premiere of Passion Week (1923) by his near-contemporary, Maximilian Steinberg, who was the protégé of Rimsky-Korsakov and mentor to Dmitri Shostakovich. Passion Week's eleven movements contrast soaring polyphony with hymn-like meditations in rich twelve-part texture that evokes the magnificent choral works of Rachmaninoff.
Last April, the Portland (OR) ensemble Cappella Romana gave the world premiere of Passion Week. Please click on the video at left to hear a sample of their performance. Then hear Clarion perform it live in New York:
