Works for Cello & Marimba
Two of Austin's most talented and virtuosic performers, Elizabeth Lee and Jacob Hodges, have come together for this unique collaboration. The cello and the marimba are each known as beautiful solo instruments, but the colors and textures they can create when they come together is unparalleled! This evening of modern, accessible chamber music will take you from soaring melodies to driving grooves and everything in between. Performer Bios:
Originally hailing from New York, cellist Elizabeth Lee has performed extensively as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. Lee graduated with her DMA in Cello Performance from the University of Texas -Butler School of Music studying with the Miró Quartet cellist Joshua Gindele. Lee was a winner of the University of Texas- Butler School of Music String Concerto Competition. Her performance was nominated by the Austin Critics Table Awards for Best Instrumentalist. Lee was also a featured soloist with the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra, and the Texas Chamber Players. She has also performed as a chamber musician and recitalist in esteemed halls including the Overture Center, Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall. As an advocate of new music she has premiered many works as well as collaborated with members of eighth blackbird, Bang On A Can All-Stars, and the Colorfield Ensemble. Lee is also a founding member of the Sonorous Ensemble premiering many newly composed works in Austin. Lee has also ventured beyond classical music and has recorded and performed with the Christian rock band Future of Forestry and toured with Fernando Ortega. In addition to performing, Lee is a dedicated teacher and maintains her own independent teaching studio. She is currently faculty at Texas Lutheran University. Jacob Hodges received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver in 2006. While in school, Jacob was recognized and received awards for various concerto and chamber music performances, as well as his work as a soloist. Hodges is passionate about new music and he has had multiple opportunities to collaborate with composers and perform new works for percussion. He performed at the Colorado College Summer Music Festival in the US premiere of two works by notable Israeli composers: "Songs of Shulamith" by Joseph Dorfman and "Six Pieces for Viola and Marimba" by Zvi Joffe and Arnon Zimra. In Austin, he collaborated with local composer Joel Hobbs in the premiere of his new work "Un Sueño de Horizonte" for mandolin and marimba. Hodges also spearheaded the effort to commission a new work for percussion ensemble, "jh variations", by renowned percussionist/composer Rich O'Meara. He performed in the world premiere of the piece with the Lamont School of Music Percussion Ensemble, which was featured in Percussion News. Recently in Austin, Hodges performed with O'Meara in a well-received concert featuring some of O'Meara's compositions as well as other works by other notable modern composers. Hodges currently teaches AP Statistics at John B. Connally High School and lives near Austin with his wife, Emily, and two sons, Joseph and Edison.
