Mama Ray and Band Concert at Pilgrim Chapel
Diane "Mama" Ray, who has been an active member of KC's jazz/blues music scene for more than 50 years, will perform Sunday, November 2nd, at Pilgrim Chapel in Kansas City. Mama Ray is a recipient of the 2014 Heritage Series Musician Award, which recognizes an outstanding musician or musical group whose body of work represents a major contribution to Kansas City's musical heritage. Past Heritage Series Musician award winners include Luqman Hamza, legendary jazz musician; Danny Cox, KC's Blues icon; and the Wild Women, a popular jazz ensemble. The Heritage Series performance by Mama Ray will be recorded on CD. The intent of all Heritage Series recordings is to preserve for posterity the live performance of a distinguished area musician in the acoustically perfect environment of Pilgrim Chapel, which due to its unique design, makes the sound of music sung or played there extraordinary.
At age 70, Mama Ray is considered by many to be the elder stateswoman of Kansas City jazz and blues. Barely 18 when she moved to KC in the early 1960s, she sang with numerous bands and eventually formed her own, Mixed Emotion, which toured throughout the U.S. and Canada for ten years. Since then she has become a permanent fixture on the local music scene, establishing with musician Rich VanSant the long-running, weekly Jazz/Blues Jam session. Every Saturday afternoon, she presides over the jam session at B. B.'s Lawnside Bar B.Q., where numerous musicians sit in with her band. She also performs at special local musical events, including the Spirit Festival and the Jazz Lovers Pub Crawl.
