One Book, One Community: The Mapmaker's Daughter
Calling all Book Clubs! In honor of National Jewish Book Month, all Book Clubs in and around Miami are invited to select "The Mapmaker's Daughter" as their book pick for the month of November. Come meet the book's author and enjoy a lunch inspired by the foods of the Sephardic Jews of Spain. On the eve of the 1492 expulsion of the Jews from Spain, sixty-six year old Amalia Cresques waits for the ship that will take her from her homeland. The spirits of those she has loved slip into her empty room to comfort and reminisce with her, as she recalls her long life, as a young girl in Sevilla, where she practiced Judaism secretly with her mother; as an interpreter for her deaf father in the court of Henry the Navigator; as tutor to the grandchildren of the Caliph of Granada and later to Isabella of Castile; but most importantly as part of the Abravanel family, one of the most illustrious Jewish names in Iberian history. Of all the roles Amalia has played, being a Jewish woman is the central fact of her life. "The Mapmaker's Daughter" celebrates women's strength and courage in the midst of the struggles, sorrows, and horrors of the Spanish Inquisition, and asks the questions of what it means to be oneself, and what it means to be home.
