"But they don't come" Increasing Latinos in your outreach programs
Have you noticed the change of demographics in your region/county? Have you wondered about working with non-traditional audiences? Do you know the trends of the population in Washington and who Extension and other organizations will serve in the future? Are you prepared? The Latino/Hispanic community has rapidly grown in the state of Washington and extension professionals are increasingly challenged to reach out and work with these audiences. Any model, approach and technique to reaching out to Latinos/as will not be effective without understanding the needs and characteristics of, as well as the cultural and socio-economic factors connected to, the Latino community. The purpose of this training is to provide tools, skills and strategies to Extension educators and other professionals that will assist them in working effectively with Latino/Hispanic communities. At the end of the training you will: Be aware of the diversity and various sub-cultures and languages that make up the Latino/a population Recognize the demographic makeup of Latinos/as in urban and rural areas in Washington Understand the complexity of immigration issues and how it relates to extension work Understand the similarities and differences of Latino cultural values to the main stream culture Identify strategies and practices to work with Latinos in their counties Design and implement culturally appropriate and effective programs with/for Latinos/as
This workshop will be facilitated by Jose Garcia-Pabon, Ph.D. Associate Extension Professor and director of the Washington State University's Latino Community Studies and Outreach Program, and Winnie Corral, director of the "Familias Unidas" Program of Lutheran community Services.
