Cultural Pursuits presents The Sound of the Northwest directed by Juan Huey-Ray with special guests: JudahSong, directed by Cora Jackson, and choreographer/dancer extraordinaire, Vania Bynum. This program in three movements opens with Jester Hairston's a cappella arrangement of "Lay Yo' Head in de Winduh, Jesus" a Negro Spiritual that recalls the lament of an enslaved mother at the end of the day after watching her entire family being sold on the auction block leaving her alone in the quarters she formerly shared with them. The agony of this woman will be vividly presented in dance by Vania Bynum. The first movement will continue with more dynamic renditions of songs in the spiritual-style ending with an extraordinary arrangement of the classic hymn "Even Me" that is guaranteed to evoke a powerful emotional response.
JudahSong takes over the second movement with original works derived from the biblical Book of Psalms by its director, Cora Jackson. If you are looking for a moment of joy and peace, and a feeling of deliverance and jubilation, look no further! Juahsong will take you there.
The Sound returns in the third movement with praise songs in diverse styles. The audience will have the opportunity to sing and dance to a Carribean Praise and the concert will end on Richard Smallwood's exhilarating "Total Praise."
