A Salute to the Zimbalists!
Actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr. was born to musical royalty - his father Efrem was one of the mid-20th century's leading violinists (and director of the esteemed Curtis Institute), and his mother was the soprano Alma Gluck, who was one of the most famous female musicians in the world. In addition to playing a variety of concert music, Efrem Senior made arrangements of works and composed some original music. Surprisingly, Efrem Junior also composed a very effective sonata for violin and piano, and was a devoted supporter of classical music.
This concert features delightful music for solo piano, the Sonata for violin and piano by Efrem Jr., a dazzling Fantasy on Le Coq d'Or by Rimsky-Korsakov arranged for violin and piano by Efrem Sr, and the Sonata for violin and piano opus 108 by Johannes Brahms, which was a favorite work for Efrem Sr.
Pianist Sara Davis Buechner is one of the leading keyboard artists of our time and is praised on four continents for her "intelligence, integrity and all-encompassing technical prowess" (New York Times), "fascinating and astounding virtuosity" (Philippine Star), and "thoughtful artistry in the full service of music" (Washington Post). Winner of a bouquet of prizes at the world's great piano competitions -- Reine Elisabeth of Belgium, Leeds, Salzburg, Sydney and Vienna -- she established her early career as winner of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, and a top medal in the Tschaikowsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. Now residing in Canada, Ms. Buechner enjoys a vibrant international performance and recording career.
"One of the violin greats of our era" (Newhouse News), Stephanie Chase's triumphant win at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow has led to an international career with concert performances as soloist with over 170 orchestras in twenty-five countries and a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. Ms. Chase has been featured with the world's most illustrious orchestras, among them the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, London Symphony, American Classical Orchestra, National Symphony (Mexico), Hanover Band, San Francisco Symphony, and Hong Kong Philharmonic, and is a frequent guest of important chamber music series and festivals.
