The Snow Queen
Princeton Youth Ballet presents The Snow Queen, a holiday ballet choreographed by Risa Kaplowitz and based on the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale that inspired the Disney movie, Frozen.
The Snow Queen uses enchanting choreography to tell this beloved winter tale. A bittersweet story of the warming power of love against the chilling grip of hate, the production begins with good friends Gerda and Kai living happily in a tiny Scandinavian village. During the festivities on Christmas Eve, shards of a mirror enchanted by the devil fall from the sky and lodge firmly in Kai's eyes. Soon, the glass splinters harden the heart of the young boy, leading him to mock the townspeople and spurn his longtime friend. Kai is abducted by the beautiful yet wicked Snow Queen, who revels in his new-found callousness. Gerda embarks on a quest to save her erstwhile playmate, braving sorceresses, robbers, and the Snow Queen's army of Ice Maidens in order to rekindle Kai's inner flame of kindness.
Set to an original arrangement of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Edvard Grieg's riveting compositions, this wintertime adventure was choreographed by Princeton Youth Ballet's founder and artistic director, Risa Kaplowitz.
In addition to the enchanting and spirited music and the unique and exciting choreography, The Snow Queen features projection artwork by David Haneman as its backdrop. Through this engaging technique, the audience is carried on a journey along with the characters as they dance from the lively Scandinavian village square to the Snow Queen's frigid ice castle.
Princeton Youth Ballet features some of the most talented ballet dancers in the region. The lead role of the Snow Queen will be performed by Jillian Davis, a former member of Princeton Youth Ballet (formerly DanceVision) and alumna of Princeton Dance and Theater Studio's Conservatory Program. After graduation, Ms. Davis trained at Pacific Northwest Ballet on full scholarship. She is currently living in New York City and working as a member of Complexions Contemporary Ballet Company.
The Snow Queen is the perfect holiday ballet for people of all ages.
