Ardhanareeswara & Namaargam: Knot the Path
The Spilling Ink Project (Washington, DC) presents an evening of two classical Indian dance projects rooted in the Bharatanatyam dance form from South India. Spilling Ink will present Ardhanareeswara. NaMaargam Dance Company (Chennai, India), will feature Namaargam: Knot the Path.
About Ardhanareeswara
Ardhanareeswara celebrates the half-man, half-woman form of Shiva. The ancient classical Sanskrit text by Adi Shankaracharya speaks of the many attributes of the great form of Ardhanareeswara--the golden radiance of the body on one side, the luminescence of a camphor lamp on the other; adorned in beautiful silks on one side, cloaked in the eight directions on the other. The dichotomies are so many in this radiating form. This choreography further explores the binaries that live within each human being--physical and mental. But moreover, it seeks to answer emotional and spiritual questions. The presentation seeks different perspectives within the heightened spiritual energy that emanates from meditating on the great God Ardhanareeswara, closing the eyes, soaking in ragas, and punctuating time with moving rhythmic patterns.
About NaMaargam: Knot the Path
Namaargam is not contemporary. It is not just a dance drama, nor a story challenging society, and not a radical's reaction to rules. It is not revolutionary, nor purist, not young, nor age old, and it is not ambivalent. Namaargam is the exploration of an indefinable truth. It is the state of all of humanity grappling with life's challenges. It is a program that stands for unalloyed joy--the soundtrack and onstage performance are memorable and soul stirring. Highly pluralistic and designed to appeal to many, there are evocative poetic interludes that take otherwise intrepid minds into their soul-spaces, and prompt them to break shackles. The power of Namaargam is affirmation in negation.
Namaargam is tough to categorize as operatic, classical, contemporary or as a Bharatanatyam dance concert. It is the art form conceptualized sans boundaries. It is seminal work, challenging the existing format of presentation, and audience perception of the traditional art and critical review.
Namaargam is about pluralism in deep-rooted tradition, interwoven knotted paths of individuals and the clarity of resolution when one reaches a spiritual state.
