Course Schedule

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. daily. Each day's teaching runs from 9 am till 5 pm. There will be a 15- minute break mid-morning and mid-afternoon, and 75 minutes scheduled for lunch. The exact time of the breaks and lunch is somewhat flexible, depending on the flow of the course on that particular day.  BFLRC is required to provide the stated number of teaching minutes in order to award continuing education credit; therefore students must attend all scheduled sessions and submit all Clinical exercises to receive full credit. Plan to devote full attention to the course during the scheduled days. Allow sufficient travel time to avoid feeling pressured to arrive or leave on a closely scheduled basis.

Bring To Class

Your full attention, enthusiasm, and experiences!
Each student will receive an extensive course syllabus in a 3-ring binder and a flash drive with additional materials. You may want to bring additional note-taking materials, a laptop computer, or tablet. There are limited electric outlets in the room.
A newborn-size doll for skills practice during the Positioning and Latch-On Technique segment (Day 1), a doll and tie-on carrier (Day 3), and a cloth or knitted breast model for practicing hand-expressing milk (Day 4).
Children in class: We support the Innocenti Declaration and recognize that observing real babies and their mothers is a central part of breastfeeding education. Therefore, babies are always welcome. Many sections of the course are interactive, and the presence of babies enhances the subject matter.  As a courtesy to everyone, we request that babies' needs be addressed promptly, gently and respectfully. A child-tender may accompany the mother to the course. Childcare will not be provided. The classroom is not suitable for mobile toddlers or loud children. Feel free to pump in the classroom if needed, although babies are 100% welcome. A separate pumping room may not be available.
Dress comfortably. You know how meeting rooms can vary in temperature! Jeans and sneakers are fine.
Bringing your own reference/text books may be useful. A selection of reference books and articles will be available for use during the course.
Lodging, meals and snacks are "on your own." Snacks and beverages may be brought into the classroom.

Accreditation and Certification: Completion of this course and the Clinical Exercises fulfils 45 hours toward the IBLCE exam prerequisite of continuing education related to breastfeeding. Candidates still need to meet other IBLCE requirements prior to taking the IBLCE exam. Taking this course should not be construed to be a guarantee of passing the IBLCE examination.  If you are taking the IBLCE examination in the same year as you take this course, notify IBLCE that this course is being used to fulfill one your prerequisites, and submit a copy of the certificate that you will receive at the completion of the course. At the end of this course, the student receives no "certification" document or title other than Continuing Education Credits. Completion of five clinical exercises of approximately 3 hours each (15 hours total) must be accomplished prior to the last day of the course. See the attached list of recommended clinical exercises for more information.
