16-year-old Mateo lives in a violent neighborhood with Made, his poor, hard-working mother. Mateo learns more money than his mother by collecting extortion money for his Uncle Walter, the local crime boss. Mateo's school threatens him with expulsion unless he enrolls in a theater program run by a priest and Made threaten to kick him out of the house unless he attends. At first, Mateo feels threatened by the group's touchy-feely, trust-building exercises and storms out. But Walter orders him to spy on the father and other group members. Mateo becomes enthralled with the free-flowing creative lifestyle of the acting troupe and has a crush on Ana, another attendee. When his best friend, Carlos goes missing, Mateo starts to realize just how dangerous his uncle can be, especially as Walter escalates his demands that Mateo produce incriminating information on the other actors.
