Eliza Lynch: Queen of Paraguay Eliza Lynch: reina de Paraguay
Ireland, Paraguay 2013 Color 75' US Northwest Coast Premiere
Director: Alan Gilsenan
Documentary, Biography, Historical
Rated: PG
Spanish and English w/ English subtitles
Cast: Leryn Franco, Maria Doyle Kennedy
After Brazil won the war against Paraguay in 1870, it spared the life, but not the reputation of the woman it claimed was the chief villain in the bloodshed. Irish-born Eliza Lynch, lifetime partner of Dictator Francisco Solano Lopez, was painted by Brazil as a puppet master, thief and whore, and in 1991 included alongside Lucretia Borgia and Catherine the Great in a book entitled The World's Wickedest Women. But, in Paraguay, the country where she lived, she is a national heroine. This film documents the story of Eliza Lynch, how she became Paraguay's beloved uncrowned Queen, how she chose to stay in her adopted country and stick by Solano through the unspeakable horrors of the War of the Triple Alliance (which wiped out 90% of the male population) until his death in the last battle in 1870, after which she dug his and her eldest son's graves with her bare hands. The people of Paraguay consider her a heroic woman who epitomized the valiant but doomed struggle of the Paraguayan people against the combined forces of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay.
