California's Response to a Historic Drought
Bellevue City Hall
Bellevue, WA
Share this event:

The ongoing, record-breaking drought in California has created havoc and disruption across the nation's most populous state. From the agricultural industry to water utilities to fisheries to wineries, virtually all sectors of the economy and most aspects of California residents' lifestyle have been affected by the drought, now in its third year.

The response from policy makers includes setting statewide water reduction goals, proposals for multi-billion dollar water development projects, hiring water cops, assessing fines and sending water wasters to "Water School", and creating a massive public education campaign.

But how successful have these efforts been? Are Californians saving enough water to make it through the drought? What happens if the winter rains don't come? What lessons have been learned?

Join the Partnership for Water and guest speaker Brett Walton as we explore this remarkable crisis as it is unfolding.

Speaker: Brett Walton
Brett Walton covers water in the United States for Circle of Blue, occasionally reporting on Australia, India, and the Middle East. He also writes the Federal Water Tap, Circle of Blue's weekly digest of U.S. government water news. Agriculture, energy, and the politics and economics of water are issues he frequently covers.

Brett was recognized in 2014 by the Society of Environmental Journalists for his work, earning 3rd place in the society's annual awards competition, for beat reporting in a small market. He has also received fellowships from SEJ (2013) and the Institute for Journalism and Natural Resources (2011).

Brett has an MA in Central Asian Studies from the University of Washington and a BA in English from the University of Richmond. He lives in Seattle where he hikes the mountains and bakes pies.
