Moving Collective presents Modern Views
Moving Collective Returns for Fall Concert Louisville, KY, July 25, 2014
After a yearlong hiatus, Moving Collective returns to the Louisville stage. Moving Collective presents Modern Views on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 8pm at the Ursuline Arts Center, located at 3113 Lexington Road, in Louisville, Kentucky on the Sacred Heart Schools campus.
Co-producers, Theresa Bautista and Amanda Johnson, have selected six works for the program. Featured in the concert are several Moving Collective veterans including danah bella DanceWorks, Colleen Byrne, Theresa Bautista and Christephor Gilbert. Also, featured will be newcomers Susie Thiel Collaborative and Ila Conoley Paladino.
d a n a h b e l l a DanceWorks, a contemporary dance company based in Southwest Virginia, will premiere a new work, "passing. pausa. gap." Choreographer danah bella, began creating the piece following a study abroad trip to London. Using the body as a living archive, bella recounts experiences and realizations through abstract movement.
Colleen Byrne of Florence, KY will present "Serenity." Originally performed in Cincinnati, Ohio in October 2013, "Serenity" focuses on exploring and appreciating the beauty of nature around us. With the fast-paced lifestyle of Western culture, people often suffer from 'tunnel vision' and forget to open up their eyes and notice the world around. The dancers' light and airy movement as they explore the world around them provides a strong contrast to the hustle and bustle of society.
Moving Collective Co-producer, Theresa Bautista, will present, "What's Your Angle?: 1. , 2. Balance, 3. Being Square, 4. Go Round" The first movement, based on gesture movement derived from circles, squares and triangles. The 2nd movement, "Balance" explores the odd man out phenomena. The third movement, "Being Square" is a solo section with a comedic twist on how to be hip. The piece concludes with a fourth section, "Go Round" is an abstract exploration of the cyclical patterns of thoughts, friendship and conversations.
Susie Thiel Collaborative of Lexington, KY will present "Her Tether to the Outside World." Premiered in New York City in 2013, Thiel's dance theatre work investigates the personal struggle of a woman's search for solace. Identity, reality and illusion make it difficult to decipher whether the events are actually taking place, have happened or are merely in her mind. The various identities show the deep complexities of a woman deteriorating.
Ila Conoley Paladino of ICONography Dance will present her first work in Louisville, KY entitled, "Alternate Endings." Paladino's premier draws inspiration from ancient Chinese Nuo dances of exorcism. The work explores simple and drastic changes that occur when we "exorcise" those things that plague us the most.
Christephor Gilbert, Artistic Director of jan street dance theatre of Louisville, KY will premiere "Under Our thickening Kiss." Four dancers will dive and fall through exciting contemporary movement while exploring themes of love and loss. In this new work Gilbert aims to infuse the romanticism of the late 19th century into the 21st century life. Gilbert's characteristic high velocity dancing and stark gestural movement will be showcased. Music for the piece, Braham's Piano Quartet #3 in C minor, will be performed live for this performance by four local musicians: Jeff Jamner, piano; Ray Weaver, violin; Michael Hill, viola; Wendy Doyle, Cello.
With the success of nine seasons behind them, Theresa Bautista and Amanda Johnson are continuing to foster the growth and appreciation for modern dance. Moving Collective exists not as a traditional dance company, but as a collection of independent and evolving choreographers and dancers from several states. We are performance-driven with goals to keep contemporary dance alive in Louisville and to provide a professional work atmosphere and venue for innovative choreographers and professionally-trained dancers. Moving Collective was created by Theresa Bautista in 2005 and designed to provide the growing number of area choreographers an opportunity to showcase their work, utilizing the depth of talented contemporary dancers in the Louisville area.
