Sounds that Transform: The "Italian-Argentinian Bach," Domenico Zipoli
Crescendo's 10th Anniversary Concert presents baroque sacred vocal music of two great composers of the 18th century: well known and loved Johann Sebastian Bach and Domenico Zipoli, whose compositions have become accessible to us only since the end of the 20th century. Zipoli's compositions are equal in artistry and style to his Italian catholic contemporaries, such as Antonio Vivaldi. But they also have their very own flavor, as they were composed in Argentina to teach the indigenous population of the Jesuit settlements of the region. Crescendo will present Zipoli's works in a unique way by combining Baroque period instruments with Andean instruments in the orchestra - which might have been a likely casting originally. Children's voices combined with the adult singers will replicate some of the color that these works were conceived in, as young voices would have sung all upper parts in the Jesuit settlements. As a contrast stand two of the early cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach, which feature Lutheran texts, expressed through the North German-Italianate rhetoric of the music, and the counterpoint that is Bach's specialty.
The works on this program are:
Missa San Ignacio and excerpts of the Vespers San Ignacio by Domenico Zipoli
Johann Sebastian Bach's cantatas BWV 150 "Nach Dir, Herr, verlanget mich" (For Thee, O Lord, I long) and BWV 61 "Nun komm der Heiden Heiland" (Now come, Savior of the heathens)

The performers are:
Crescendo Choir and Youth Singers
Crescendo Period Instrument Orchestra and Andean Instruments
Julianne Baird, Soprano
Nicholas Tamagna, Countertenor
Pablo Bustos, Tenor
Christine Gevert, Conductor
