Clogging Workshop with Evie Ladin - In this mixed level clogging class Evie will offer something for every level - both in footwork and choreography - dancing with a partner and in groups. An experienced and patient teacher, Evie is adept at both breaking down rhythms to their basic components, and building complex patterns. Her primary goal is for every level of dancer to enjoy dancing, gaining fluidity as well as understanding a percussive dancer's role in the music.
Southern Appalachian flatfoot clogging is a unique mix of English, Irish, African and Native American step dance styles, developed in the Southeastern US, where the fiddle met the banjo. Both a solo improvisational form, and performed by groups in choreography, clogging adds percussion to old-time string band music, and is a great workout.
The City Stompers meet twice a week in Manhattan to dance with teachers Megan Downes, Kristin Andreassen, and David Harvey. They offer regular weekly classes in traditional American flatfoot clogging, as well as special workshops with visiting guest teachers.
Evie Ladin is a banjo player, step-dancer, singer, songwriter and square-dance caller with a lifetime of experience in traditional American cultural arts. The polyrhythmic funk of her clawhammer banjo, resonant voice, real stories and rhythmic dance - have been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Celtic Connections, Lincoln Center to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Evie started playing banjo at the age of 8, clogging since 5, and has a fluid expressiveness in these traditional Appalachian arts, even as she brings an urban edge and contemporary vision. Based in Oakland, CA, Evie tours solo, duo with Keith Terry, with her expansive stringband Evil Diane, and with Keith Terry's projects she is the Executive Director of the International Body Music Festival since 2008. Evie has 2 solo CDs, 3 CDs with the Stairwell Sisters, 2 with Crosspulse, plus two instructional DVDs Buckdancing for Beginners and Part Two: Freestyle. Evie teaches banjo, harmony singing and percussive dance, and calls rowdy square dances in the San Francisco Bay Area when you can find her there. Her live performance is a demonstrative, delightfully gorgeous storm.
