Love Triangle
The Salon Series Performances: An intimate afternoon of music, music lovers, wine and hors d'oeuvres in some of the Bay Area's most beautiful homes!

"Love Triangle" featuring:
Aileen Chanco

"I believe that I do not respect and admire her so much as I love her and am under her spell. Often I must forcibly restrain myself from just quietly putting my arms around her and evenI don't know, it seems so natural that she would not take it ill."
-Letter written to Joseph Joachim from Johannes Brahms about Clara Schumann (1859)

Perhaps no relationship in music has created as much speculation and rumor as Johannes Brahms' "friendship" with Robert Schumann's wife, Clara. Brahms was a young and unknown composer when he first met the famous couple and presented them with his "calling card", the Sonata no. 3 op. 5.  Amidst the tragedy and despair of Robert's suicide attempt, his friendship to Clara deepened and he became her lifelong friend even after the death of Robert. If and when it went beyond, we will never know for sureexcept for the letters that were left behind. Don't miss our first Salon Series Performance of the season and experience a musical journey that is intimate, informal and festive.  Pianist Aileen Chanco, whose playing has been described as "steeped in expressiveness and tastefulness to the core" [The San Jose Mercury News] and "attractively impetuous" [The Boston Globe], performs the works of two titans of the Romantic period who shared a deep passion for the same brilliant woman, Clara Wieck Schumann: a woman whose inspiration is imbedded in their music.

"Play my Kreisleriana occasionally. In some passages there is to be found an utterly wild love, and your life and mine." Robert Schumann

Program:
SCHUMANN Kreisleriana op. 16
BRAHMS Sonata no. 3 in f minor op. 5
