Indie Meme is proud to present the National Award winning Children's Film "KAPHAL-WILD BERRIES" in Austin. Part of proceeds will benefit Chula League Austin, a non-profit supporting arts & artful landscapes in East Austin.
Adventurous & innocent children, a Garhwal village in the Himalayas, a mysterious old woman who is believed to prey on young ones, together all form the perfect elements for a bedtime story, but children's film Kaphal (Wild Berries) is more than that.
Set against the backdrop of snowcapped Himalayan mountains, Kaphal is a sweet-hearted story of two brothers, Makar and Kamru, whose prank-filled routine is interrupted by the return of their father Kailash from the city. As Kailash tries to fit back into village life, the boys and their friends set out on an adventure to find Pagli Dadi, an alleged witch (mad granny), and persuade her to make their father disappear! Through their journey, the boys learn many lessons, including that people are not always what they seem, and magic may work in unpredictable ways.
Directed by Batul Mukhtiar, Kaphal is produced by the Children's Film Society India (CFSI) and aimed at children, but it works equally for their parents. The naturalistic performances by the children, none of whom has acted before, are memorable, as are the beautiful locations in Garhwal, India. Woven around the knee-high antics of Makar, Kamru and their buddies is a web of grown-up concerns for the economy of the hilly region, the relationship between sons and fathers, a pro-environment message, and a plea for tolerance.

DIRECTOR'S BIO:
Batul Mukhtiar was born in 1965 in Mumbai, India. She is a filmmaker, an alumnus of the Film & Television Institute of India, Pune. Apart from several documentary shorts, she has directed a documentary feature 150 SECONDS AGO which travelled to many prestigious festivals across the world. In 2007, she directed a children's feature film, LILKEE for the Children's Film Society, India. KAPHAL-Wild Berries is her second children's feature.
