Patterns (Starts September 14, 2014)
Students in Patterns learn Fine Line's "Freedom, Power, Responsibility" method for applying the standard comedic "rule of three" as it relates to improvisation and apply it at every level of their performance from warm-ups to group games and exercises to scenework. Developed by Fine Line producer Rachel Klein and refined through her work with the Harold team Maxitor, FPR helps increase awareness of patterns as they form and allows performers to better utilize these patterns to collaboratively create the most rewarding comedic scenarios for themselves and their audience. Patterns is taught by members of Maxitor who bring not only expertise in the technique, but years of experience using it to create rewarding, hilarious shows.
The prerequisite is basic scenework instruction at an improv training center/comedy school.
Patterns will be offered at Green Street Studios (185 Green Street in Cambridge) on Sundays from 4-6pm.
Cost: $75 for 4 weekly classes.
Dates: - Sunday, September 14 - Sunday, September 21 - Sunday, September 28 - Sunday, October 5
Class max: 15
Instructor: Jackie Arko
Jackie Arko, a founding member of Fine Line Comedy, has been performing, teaching, directing, and/or producing comedy for going on 10 years. She is a cast member of FLC house team Summer Boyfriend, the iconic Boston Harold team Maxitor, and improv super group Bearcats. In addition, Jackie co-produces and co-hosts The Kerfuffle, a family-unfriendly variety show featuring Boston's best comedians getting ridiculous. A long-time Harold teacher, Jackie has performed in and taught workshops at various comedy festivals on the East Coast and beyond. She is always looking for ways to incorporate her background in theatrical acting techniques into her improv instruction. She pushes students to listen to their scene partners with honesty and openness, to exist in the moment, and to explore - and stick with - the realities they create for themselves. Her teaching style is linear, transparent, and includes a variety of hastily-drawn yet highly-informative visual aids. The passion she feels for teaching and for long-form improv is evident from day one. Also, she swears in class. A lot.
