Singing in the Spirit: Creating Community Across Divides
Art & Soul Cafe St. Louis is excited to host a community singing event with Dr. Kathy Bullock, Professor of Music at Berea College, Berea, Kentucky. We hope to draw together a diverse group of professional and non-professional singers from across the St. Louis region to celebrate and sing together the music from the African-American tradition. The music begins with Spirituals from the 18th and 19th centuries during slavery. Gospel music, the 20th and 21st century version of African-American sacred music, emerged from these earlier forms. The African-American trajectory of human experience expressed through song attests to the power of singing together as a means of connection and change.

On Saturday, Dr. Bullock will lead a series of sessions focusing on Spirituals, Appalachian and African American Musical Connections, and Gospel.
On Sunday morning at 9 am, we will participate in a worship service at New Northside Baptist Church, providing 2-3 musical pieces.  We will continue the workshop on Sunday afternoon.

A videographer will document the workshop to provide footage for the promotion of a larger gathering in the Spring of 2015.
