Party Time!
Twenty years ago, John Alderete and some of his musically-inclined colleagues at the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center gathered to play chamber music. Their goals were simple: find an outlet to express their passion for music (and have fun in the process), and play music for the patients as a form of relief and entertainment. It is well-documented that music and science are closely related, often making doctors excellent musicians. Dr. Alderete grew his small nucleus to a chamber orchestra, adopting the neighborhood lake's name for its official title: the Lake Union Civic Orchestra (known affectionately as LUCO). To this day, the orchestra's connection to the scientific field is as vibrant as ever. I often brag that LUCO features more PhDs than any other orchestra in town!
LUCO is indeed a formidable ensemble of great personalities and a vast array of talents, driven by a pure, adventurous passion for music. Over the years, LUCO's musical standards kept rising, and our reach into the most challenging repertoire grew bolder. Every time the bar was raised, LUCO responded with renewed dedication and enthusiasm. Our foray into the towering symphonies of Mahler took the orchestra to musical heights that have become precious memories on which we keep building our artistry.
Anniversaries are wonderful opportunities to reflect, assess, celebrate, and grow. As we were planning our jubilee repertoire, we decided to involve YOU, our audience. The survey we designed to collect information on the LUCO community's musical requests, in which many of you participated, revealed a great variety of musical gems - some familiar, and others new discoveries.
LUCO has always been closely associated with living composers, and our 20th Anniversary season will feature five world premieres: three fanfares composed by college students as part of a composition contest, a new piece composed by Eric Guinivan, who is fast becoming a star in his field, and Terra Nostra, a piece with which I was commissioned, with the stipulation that it should be about climate change! Other highlights include the Pines of Rome, a Sibelius tribute with his ground-breaking first symphony, Mozart's Double Concerto for Flute and Harp with our own outstanding musicians as soloists, our annual Chamber Music Cabaret Concert Downstairs at Town Hall which is becoming a classic, and Rachmaninov's third piano concerto, one of the most challenging concertos in the repertoire, which we are honored to present with powerhouse virtuoso Joel Fan at Meany Hall for our grand finale.
Those who have attended our concerts can attest to the unique feelings of inclusiveness, hospitality, warmth, vibrancy, and stirring passions they elicit. We play music by the people and for the people, and this 20th Anniversary is a tribute to your loyalty and steadfast support. YOU made it possible!
Now it's PARTY TIME!
