Sustainable Small Farming and Ranching Class
This semester-long class meets for 3 hours (6-9 pm) every Tuesday evening from September 16th - December 9th at the WSU Puyallup Research and Extension Center. It will provide practical information about whole farm planning, ecologically-based, diversified production systems, and alternative marketing techniques. Gain knowledge of the practical aspects of sustainable small acreage production systems for a wide variety of enterprises. The course involves guest lectures from local farmers, field trips, as well as classroom instruction. Students will develop a whole-farm plan during the class. Two Saturday field trips to local farms are included in the class (dates TBD).
Topics covered include:
Integrated soil fertility management and composting
Integrated pest management at the farm level
Livestock production based on rotational grazing
Whole farm planning, crop planning and, record keeping strategies
Evaluating personal and family goals
Researching marketing and community resources
