jalan Crossland Bio:

Raised in a small Wyoming town, Jalan Crossland is one of a very few "alt country" artists his age who still claims the "country" as home. Maybe this explains the lyrical, 'truth is stranger than fiction' wobble to his songs about 21st century rural life. Live and on recordings he adds dazzling guitar and banjo fingerpicking to his kanky tales of hobos, tires, "mobile homes", strippers, motorcycles, trucks, cars, vice presidents and methamphetamines ("Drugs are bad" says Jalan).

Jalan has been touring both solo and with a band for fifteen years, but his musical upbringing is of course longer, more sordid. Though the guitar spends a lot of time in Jalan's hands these days, the first stringed doo-dad that caught his young eye and ear was the banjo, his uncle Dan figuring prominently in this. Despite this banjo affliction, Jalan somehow survived his Wyoming Teenage Boy Instinct for Self-Destruction well enough, to emerge in his twenties playing electric guitar for money on the road. "All big hair playing a whammy-bar Ibanez Firebird copy, in Iron Maiden wannabe bands."
True to his slacker past, Jalan managed a mere second place finish in the 1997 Winfield National Guitar Fingerpicking competition.

Jalan Crossland released his new album (his seventh), No Cause For Despair on June 20. The album features 11 new compositions and marks his return to the studio with his bandmates along with a few guest instrumental specialists. Original drummer/percussionist Pat Madsen rejoins the trio (he first played on Trailer Park Fire & Other Tragedies), and long time sideman/bassist/collaborator Shaun Kelley contributed production and arrangement skills, as well as strings and vocals.
The album is the third project Jalan has recorded at Thunderground Sound Studios in Laramie WY (recording engineer Dan Tinker - mixing engineer James Stevens - mastering engineer Jim Wilson).

------------------------------------------------------

J Shogren describes his music as "Rootsy acoustic one-string lumberjack music."

J Shogren and his long time collaborator multi-instrumentalist Jascha Herdt play hard acoustic music from lives lived in loud proportions. Their style of pulp americana is a modern interpretation of traditional music: an amalgamation of roots, popular, blues, old timey, folk, country/western, jazz, vaudeville, rockabilly, ballads, and polka. Their varied sound has a vitality reminiscent of old dancehall music filtered through a contemporary dissonant transmitter

(J Shogren's 'day job' is as Stroock Professor of Natural Resource Conservation & Management in the UWYO BUSINESS and Finance College.  In 2007 he shared in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Nobel Peace Prize)
