Tour an Edible Forest near Monmouth, Illinois
Tour a mature forest of edible fruits, nuts, and berries that Iowa Nut Growers Association president, Gary Fernald, started planting on 24 acres in 1967 near Monmouth, Illinois. Gary will explain the growth conditions, pollination requirement, and other techniques of food forestry as you stroll through the edible forest and see what the mature trees look like.

Some of the trees in this Edible Forest include:
Far northern pecans, hazelnuts, english walnut, turkish tree hazel, pawpaw, american persimmon, chestnut, black walnut, butternut, japanese heartnut, shagbark & shellbark hickory trees.

There will be free far northern pecan seedlings ideal for our climate available that will either need to be planted or potted immediately.

We are doing this to promote food forests and edible landscaping. We are hoping that the people that attend this tour will be inspired and use the knowledge in the creation of their own edible landscape or will help to create a food forest in our area. If you can make it to this you will be able to learn from one of the foremost experts in the field and certainly the expert for our area. This is a great opportunity!

The Google Map has a marker right where you enter the parking lot of the church. Just zoom out to find your way or use the "get directions" link on the Google map.

The tour will take 2-3 hours but Gary will probably stick around and answer questions as long as someone is interested.

We offered this tour several times last year and the participants loved it!  See photos from last years "Tour of an Edible Forest":
