Learning Stories for Authentic Assessment

Springtime rolls around and you're thinking a lot about assessments. You consider all of the learning and development you've observed over the course of the year. You want to demonstrate this growth in a way that communicates the depth and complexity of children's work, something more than a checklist of what children can and cannot do. How can you perform assessments that build from children's strengths, as well as help families understand the depth of learning that is taking place in your classroom?

The "Learning Stories" model, developed in New Zealand, offers educators an authentic, strengths-based tool for reporting children's work. Learning Stories offer children a reflection of their own work, offer families a window into their child's learning, and offer educators genuine data to inform many different modes of assessment.

This workshop will include examples of effective Learning Stories, and offer opportunities for participants to add their own perspectives to the conversation. We'll explore guidelines that educators can use to write Learning Stories for children and families in their own programs
