Río Bravo 20th Anniversary Performance
Guadalupe Theater
San Antonio, TX
Share this event:

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center (GCAC) proudly presents the 20th anniversary of Rio Bravo, featuring the GCAC Dance Company, San Antonio stage and film star Jesse Borrego, and international dance director Juan Carlos Gaytan from the Ballet Folklórico of Colima, Mexico.  The special anniversary performance takes place September 26, 27 & 28, 2014 at the historic Guadalupe Theater.

When the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center first presented Rio Bravo in July 1994, it performed to sold-out houses at the Carver Theater. This enthusiasm compelled the Guadalupe to revive the production at the Carver in the summer of 1995.  The last time the Guadalupe brought Rio Bravo back on stage was in 2005 - again to a sold out audience - this time at the Guadalupe Theater.

Rio Bravo, a chronicle of the evolution of music and dance along the U.S-Mexico border from pre-Columbian time to present-day Tejano, consists of a cast of over 30 artists including live music by Mariachi Azteca de America and Conjunto band La Naturaleza de Santiago Garza.

Much of the production's wide appeal is attributed to its colorful and dynamic interweaving of the music, dance and culture of the South Texas/Mexico border region from pre-Columbian times to the present.  Rafael Zamarripa, one of Mexico's most distinguished folklórico instructors, created the choreography as well as the costume, scenery and lighting designs.

Zamarripa credits the "Ancient Texans" permanent exhibition at the Witte Museum for providing the inspiration for the show's opening segment, titled "El Principio" (The Beginning).  The second section, "Matlachines," is based on one of the most important dances of Mexico with roots in indigenous cultures. The production then moves to the days of the newly arrived European immigrants whose music inspired the culture of upper-class dance salons. "El Viejo Mercado," the fourth suite, was inspired by a nineteenth-century oil painting and photos of the old marketplace in downtown San Antonio. "Río Bravo" concludes with "San Antonio Hoy," a representation of popular dance in modern-day San Antonio, with Tejano musicians accompanying the dancers.

In addition to the choreography, costumes, and dancers themselves, San Antonio native film and stage actor, Jesse Borrego plays an integral part in the cohesiveness of the performance. Jesse and the Dance Company have worked together in various productions over the Dance Company's history and "Rio Bravo" is one of the most acclaimed. The theatrical production also includes live music by a Mariachi and a Conjunto band.
