Thousands of children are fleeing violence in Central America and seeking safety in the United States. Many of these children have legitimate claims to legal residency in the United States, but they have no right to a free lawyer. National Justice for Our Neighbors (NJFON) and Church World Service (CWS) provide free legal services to unaccompanied children. According to the Transactional Records Clearinghouse, a project of Syracuse University, 9 out of 10 unaccompanied minors without legal representation are sent back home. With your support we can ensure that these children do not stand in court alone.
NJFON and CWS are responding to this crisis by sending attorneys to shelters in San Antonio, Texas, including Lackland Air Force Base, where children are being temporarily housed, to inform them of their legal rights and advise them of their options before being released into the custody of sponsors. Rob Rutland-Brown, Executive Director of NJFON, and Jen Smyers, Associate Director, Immigration and Refugee Policy at CWS, will talk about the current state of this crisis and plans for supporting unaccompanied children with legal representation after they have left temporary shelters, along with a presentation by one of our expert attorneys working directly with unaccompanied children followed by Q&A.
