ABOUT THE PLAY
A great proponent of the arts in addition to being an accomplished actor, poet and playwright, Karol Wojtyla (Pope St. John Paul II) penned several plays during his life and even co-founded an underground cultural resistance theater in Nazi occupied Poland during World War II. "The Jeweler's Shop" is his best-known play and a true work of art that probes the depths of human love, longing, brokenness, and ultimately, hope.
This profound drama explores the joys, mysteries and pitfalls of love in the lives of three couples: a newlywed couple, a veteran married couple whose marriage is on the rocks, and then twenty seven years later the son of the first couple and the daughter of the second, now engaged to one another. The journey of each couple is touched and influenced by the enigmatic figure of the town jeweler. This timeless poetic drama was the subject of a 1989 film starring Burt Lancaster, Ben Cross and Olivia Hussey, and made its New York debut in 1994 Off Broadway.
Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
